My years in Paris have given me a chance to see afresh, to experience life in one of the world’s great cities and explore new subject matter.

Along with such paintings as Art Appreciation and Inventory (on the People page), here are some paintings that have emerged from my time in Paris.  You’ll also find plenty of Parisians and Paris scenes on the Photographs page. In terms of the paintings here, I’ve only selected paintings that are most clearly about the city (or vicinity). Several are set in museums, especially the Louvre and Musée d’Orsay, but I’ve spent a lot of time cycling through the streets looking for people, scenes or moments that interest me. When they become paintings something fleeting is made, if not permanent, at least more durable than would otherwise have been the case. My time in Paris has coincided with the Covid pandemic, hence Montmartre Prayer, deriving from the moment I saw a tourist looking around her and evidently praying, and Lockdown, where I enlarged a Tuileries statue and placed her over the Rue de Rivoli. But my aim continues to be variety, whether between distance and intimacy, monuments and museums, rain and sunshine. These visual meditations on the City of Light complement the written meditation you’ll find in Portraits from Paris.
